If you find an object of value (i.e. one with a value of more than €10), you are obliged to hand the object in. A find report will be made. For this purpose, the object, the place and time it was found, as well as your personal details will be taken down.
Storage and sale by auction
The lost property office is obliged to hold items for at least six months. If the owner does not get in contact within this period, you as the finder can claim the found item. If you do not exercise this right or if the object was found in a public building or public transport, the town or municipality itself becomes owner of the item.
These items are then periodically sold by auction following notice in advance by the lost property office. Proceeds from the auctions go to the household of the municipality.
Who do I have to contact?
Please contact the Public Order Office (Ordnungsamt) of your municipality or town.
