Apply for electronic residency document (eAT)

    Overview

    Since 01.09.2011, residency permits have been issued in the form of a card with additional electronic functions. Infants and children also receive their own cards. A contactless chip is embedded in the eAT. It stores


    - biometric data
      (photo, two fingerprints for holders over the age of six),
    - ancillary provisions in connection with the residency permit
      (e.g. requirements) and
    - personal data.

    The eAT includes the following residency documentation:

    - residency permit

    - permanent residency permit

    EU permanent residency permit

    - residency card for citizens of third countries who are
      family members of citizens of an EU/EEA country
    - permanent residency card for citizens of third countries who are
      family members of citizens of an EU/EEA country
    - residency permit for Swiss citizens and their family members from
      third countries, if they decide on an eAT


    Electronic residency document (eAT)

    Details

    Procedure

    You can use the residency document in the same way as the new personal ID cards for German citizens. Detailed information on the electronic use of the card can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).
    You must apply in person for the electronic residency document at the responsible office. Your fingerprints will be taken at the office. Children over the age of six must also provide their fingerprints.
     

    Requirements

    The permit must be for residency of at least one month in duration.
     

    Documents

    - Passport or passport-substitution papers

    - a biometric passport photo

    further documentation, depending on the procedure.

    Please enquire at the foreigners’ registration authorities in advance as to which documentation is required.
     

    Fees

    - Issue of a residency permit of up to one year: €100

    - Issue of a residency permit of more than one year: €110

    - Extension of residency permit by up to three months: €65

    - Extension of residency permit by more than three months: €80

    - Permanent residency permit and EU permanent residency permit:
       €135

    - Permanent residency for highly-qualified persons: €250

    - Permanent residency permit for the purposes of self-employment:
       €200
